Chapter - 10.1 Administration. Banners types

Rotator configuration page can accessed by clicking Banner Rotator
There are 2 types of banners can be submitted to rotator. Local Image Banner and Code Banner.

10.1.1 Local Image Banner

Before creating an Image Banner, the actual banner picture must be uploaded into "banners" folder at the classified. All files currently located in "banners" folder and not already submitted to rotator would be displayed in "Available Image Banners" box. To quickly insert a banner to rotator:

  • Select and double click an image file from "Available Image Banners"
  • Fill banner Alt property (shows banner description with mouse over image)
  • Type a URL address the banner should point to
  • Type Site Name
  • Type owner email address (should be an email from one of the user accounts at classified)
  • Click Add to Rotator button

You just inserted a first banner into zone 1 with weight 1 and 30 days duration.

10.1.2 Zones

Zones are the selected locations within classified pages where certain banners would be rotated. Banners included into the same zone would be randomly selected (one at a time) and displayed at the zone location with each page refresh or load.

By default, only First zone made active and allocated at logo_table template in Content Management. It is located to the right from the Logo at the top of the site. In order to utilize the rest of the zones, respective zone must be activated and the zone code must be inserted at the desired location at the classified. Any banner in the list can only belong to a single zone. In case the same banner should be rotated in different zones, create a duplicate banner and change zone for second copy. Use "duplicate", "edit" links to duplicate and edit banner properties.

At the bottom of banner management page, you would find ZONES section. From here, you may activate a zone, give it a friendly name and get the zone insertion code. Friendly zone name does not play active role and only used for zone drop down selection boxes for easy identification.-

Check the Status box next to each zone you would like to activate, type a friendly name and click "Save Zone" button. If zone is disabled and you have banners in that zone, all rows for respective banners in the list would be rendered with alternative color.

Check the Display box if you would like to include this zone into the list of zones at the automated banners submission page for clients. If included, this zone would be available to select from the drop down list at the advertise.asp page.

Insertion code is important. It must be properly inserted into the page for the zone to begin rotation. There are 2 types of code.

  1. ASP zone code, which presented like: <%= RotateBanner(n) %>
  2. Text zone code, which presented like: :RotateBanner=n:

ASP zone code

ASP zone code should be inserted directly into the respective page by editing it in any text editor. Appropriate location for the rotator zone would be the default page, ad view page, categories page, "True" content pages, Side Bar/Portal templates as well as any other pages at the classified, which included a standard header and footer and seem appropriate for banners rotation. To position zone on a page (left, right, center) use standard HTML tags to enclose zone code. Such as:

<p align="right"> <%= RotateBanner(3) %> </p>

Above code floats rotator zone 3 to the right. Make sure to insert the code to the "correct spot" without interfering with an existed HTML or ASP code. Make sure all images in the rotator fit the allocated for the Zone space. In Side/Portal bars for instance, make sure rotator images width is not over the width set for boxes.

Text zone code

Text zone code could be inserted into 7 templates. Main_Page_Center and custom1_6 templates.

Text zone code also may be inserted into Subcategories and 3-rd Categories list pages by placing the codeto "Full Description" field for Category, Subcategory or 3-rd Category level at Category Administration page.

10.1.3 Guidelines

ASP zone code preferred over Text zone code because text code would require more processing. Use the Text code only if you are unable to insert the ASP into the content page directly.

The fact that 10 zones are available, does not mean they could be used at once on a single page. First, the page would look like a banners farm and become unattractive. Second, the processing time would be maxed out. 1-3 zones on a page would be the best choice. "On a page" in this case means the entire page including header, footer and content page. Keep in mind that if header, footer and a default page have one rotator zone each, then the default.asp page would totally host 3 zones; and the rest of the pages, which physically do not have zone inserted, would have 2 zones each (from footer and header respectively).

Uncheck if possible a Gather View Statistics configuration for banners. When checked off, banner view statistics not updated (a small red cross appears in View column within the banners list). Gathering view statistics might create an overhead and expansion of MSSQL system log specifically when there is more than one zone inserted to a single page.

Note: Banner clicks still counted when Gather View Statistics is [off].

10.1.4 Banners Weight

Each banner in a zone may be assigned a "weight" in units from 1 to 10. The weight units are abstract numbers, which control the priority (frequency) of the banner appearance in a zone. The more weight is, the more frequently banner would appear in a zone during rotation. The weight for a given banner works only in relation with weight values for all other banners in a zone. If you have only two banners with the weight 5 and 10 in a zone, then it would be equal to the scenario where have corresponding banners weight equals to2 and 4. That is second banner would appear twice as frequent as the first.

The weight values displayed in banners list under W-t(%) column. The value in parentheses is the actual, calculated banner priority in percentage from total weight of all banners in a zone.

10.1.5 Duration and Impressions

Each rotating banner runs for certain duration and/or until reached specified number of impressions. If the Duration and Impressions are set to a specific number (other than unlimited) for a given banner, then the banner would expire when either duration ended or number of impressions reached (whichever comes first). The banner expiration occurs at midnight. Therefore, the number of impressions at the time of expiration might be slightly off limit when.

10.1.6 Code Banner

The zones administration for Code Banners is practically the same as with Local Image Banner. There is however, a substantial difference between those two types of banners. Creating Code banner requires certain HTML coding skills. If you do not understand HTML code syntax then better use Local Image Banner because the code banner may be harmful for your site if invalid or worse yet malicious code provided to your by a client.

To insert a code banner use corresponding radio button at the top of banners administration page, then paste or type HTML code into text box. Fill common banner properties and click save.

Code banners could be constructed to host remote or local banner images, java script based banners or ads (like Google Ads), flash banners as well as any valid HTML code which renders any type of content (formatted text, number of small images for the same banner spot, etc…).

It is important to make sure the inserted HTML code renders a content, which fits well within boundaries of parent layers where you inserted a zone code. If for instance you created a zone within the sidebars (width 180px), then make sure the inserted Code Banner constructed with images, flash banners, or textual content does not take more that 180px in width.

10.1.7 Code Banner Clicks

A special consideration should be taken for clicks count with Code Banners. Normally it is not possible to count Code Banners clicks because the link would take clients directly to the advertiser web site bypassing any local clicks counter scripts. You may rectify this for certain types of remotely hosted banners. If a banner code link constructed with <a> link tag, then there is a way to count clicks for that banner.

Let say you have afollowing banner code created for one of rotating banners:

<a href="" target="_blank">
<img border="0" src= /></a>

To make an amendment, go to Edit page for that banner and type advertisers’ URL link within the URL Address optional field. In this case it would be:

Next, note the Banner Internal ID (last option within banner properties). Let us say the ID is 4. Modify the href property in an <a> tag within the code so that the link points to moveout.asp?id=4. The resulted banner code would look like:

<a href=" moveout.asp?id=4" target="_blank"><img border="0" src= /></a>

Now, when visitors click a banner they would be taken to clicks count page (moveout.asp), which registers a click in statistics and redirects clients to the destination URL.

Note: This technique is not valid for Flash banners or banners rendered with JavaScript (Google AdSense). Those types of banners are not possible to count for clicks at all.

10.1.8 Statistics

Banner statistics (clicks, views) presented at the Rotator management page. In order to view detailed banners’ statistics however (daily clicks/views), email address specified for that banner must belong to the user account at classified. For detailed view, logon to that account, go to "Advertise with us" page and click "Rotator Statistics" link.

About gathering view statistics

Uncheck if possible a Gather View Statistics configuration for banners. When checked off, banner view statistics not updated (a small red cross appears in View column within the banners list). Gathering view statistics might create an overhead and expansion of MSSQL system log specifically when there is more than one zone inserted to a single page.

Note: Banner clicks still counted when Gather View Statistics is [off].
